Do you want to lose a few pounds? Don’t just change what you eat, but also what you drink
In 2019, one in two adults in the Netherlands was overweight. Therefore, it is not surprising that many people want to lose a few pounds. Workouts, gyms, healthy salads, and fewer calories – we all know what it takes to get fit. However, we often forget an important part: be aware of what you drink. These 11 healthy drinks could help you lose weight.
It won’t surprise you that water is number 1 on this list. Water is the healthiest beverage you can drink if you want to lose weight. Drink a glass of water before a meal and you will soon notice that you feel fuller. You will often feel hungry while in reality you are just thirsty. “The more water you drink, the more weight you will lose,” says nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein. The amount of water to drink per day varies from one person to another. For one person, one and a half to two liters a day is the minimum amount, while others need three liters. Drinking enough water not only helps you lose weight, it is also great for your skin.
2. Water with fruit
At some point, you can get tired of plain water. One solution is to give the water a different flavor. You can easily do this by adding some fresh fruit and letting the water take on its flavor. You can also add a little juice to your glass of water, such as cranberry, orange, or grapefruit juice. This way, your “boring” water tastes a bit sweeter, but is still one of the healthiest drinks if you want to lose weight.
3. Green tea
Green tea contains special antioxidants, catechins. These catechins are supposed to boost metabolism and cause your body to burn more fat. An analysis of fourteen studies showed that people who drank a lot of green tea lost about four kilos more weight than people who did not drink it.
4. Tart cherry juice
Lack of sleep is often related to obesity, weight gain, and difficulty losing weight. One fruit that can help you sleep better is the cherry. Eating cherries or drinking cherry juice for good sleep is very fruitful. This tasty and healthy fruit juice naturally contains a high amount of melatonin and tryptophan. These substances ensure that you fall asleep faster and also sleep much deeper and for longer. In a single animal test, fatty foods were collected for two groups of rats. One group of rats received lyophilized tart cherry powder, and the control group did not. The rats given the cherries experienced a nine percent reduction in abdominal fat and other signs of metabolic disease.
Good news for coffee drinkers: One cup of coffee is enough for you to lose weight. As long as you don’t add a lot of milk and sugar, of course. A recent study shows that drinking four cups of coffee a day can lead to a 4% reduction in body fat. According to researchers, caffeine has a positive effect on human metabolism.
6. Psyllium fiber in water
Psyllium fiber is a type of soluble fiber that is used in the Metamucil fiber supplement. Psyllium absorbs moisture in your body and can help you feel full, making it easier to eat less.
7. Grape juice
If you fancy a sweet drink, fruit juice seems like a good and healthy option. Unfortunately, this is not entirely true. Although fruit juices seem healthy, they are often huge sugar bombs. It is not the best if you want to lose some weight. If you still want to have fruit juice, opt for a small glass of grapefruit juice. In a 12-week study, 100 obese men and women were divided into three groups. The first group ate half a grapefruit before each meal; the second group drank a glass of grapefruit juice before each meal; the last group did not have grapefruits. On average, those who ate grapefruit lost about 1.6 kilos and those who drank grapefruit juice lost 1.5 kilos. The control group, which did not eat grapefruit, lost less than a pound in twelve weeks.
8. Coconut water and watermelon water
Eating sweet drinks with any exercise is suitable for the body. However, do not choose a sports drink from the vending machine but, for example, coconut water or watermelon water. Both are low in sugars, but they help you get enough fluid after exercise. Watermelon is rich in L-citrulline, an amino acid that helps remove lactic acid from muscles and reduces muscle pain and fatigue. Have you tried making watermelon water yourself? Combine 1200 grams of ripe seedless watermelon (diced) and a cup of cold water in a blender or food processor. Mix until liquid.
9. An organic plant protein shake
Protein is the building block of muscles and promotes satiety. Both can help with weight loss. If they are low in calories, high-protein drinks can be an effective weight loss tool, especially if you take them as meal replacements or as a snack.
10. White tea
Green tea works great when it comes to healthy tea. However, white tea also plays a role in weight loss and is also healthy. White tea contains a powerful combination of caffeine and catechin EGCG to burn fat. Some studies show that this catechin prevents the formation of new fat cells. White tea stimulates metabolism and the body’s ability to break down existing fat and use it for energy, according to research.
11. A low calorie shake
Low calorie shakes with protein powders are a good way to counteract hunger pangs. It is better to prepare such a shake yourself, so that you know exactly what is in your drink. Take a scoop of protein powder, some frozen berries, some (almond) milk and mix it all together.
